#2 Alternative to Cable TV: Front Row

Apple has this media center software that comes with every Mac called Front Row. It has a nice user interface and is really east to use.

Front Row allows you to view all the music, podcasts, movies, and TV shows from iTunes and your photos from you guessed it iPhoto. This media center is made to work great with the Apple Remote. Just navigate through the menu with the five button remote and click play and your ready to go. When you are playing movies, podcasts, or TV shows it remembers where you left off and starts from that point when you want to finish. Next to any podcast you haven't listened to or watched before it it shows a blue dot which is a nice feature.

Then again there are some not so nice "features" in this piece of Apple software. First of all you can't download anything while sitting on the couch. In other words every movie, tv show, podcast or song that you want to download has to be done in iTunes. Front Row pretty much displays the content that you already have inside iPhoto and iTunes. You can't install any apps into Front Row so you watch what you already got. iTunes, for those of you who don't know, has limited codec support. Since Front Row pulls it's content from iTunes, this media center has small codec support.

If you're a Mac user looking for an extremely simple way to access your iTunes and iPhoto content this is the media center for you. I would not replace my cable TV service with this software because you still have to pay for shows from iTunes. Front Row is one of the greatest ways to play your whole podcast collection. If you would like to stream online media from sites like YouTube and Hulu, you'd probably be better off with Plex, Boxee, or XBMC.
