RED FLAGS:

Usually, the thing that will tip you off is a change in behavior.

So, lets look at just a few of the behaviors that you might observe, if your loved one was being unfaithful:

Behavior At Home: Your partner or spouse

Appears distant, show a lack of interest or develop an unexplained aloofness

Work-related: Your partner or spouse

Work longer hours, more frequentlyand keep you from viewing their paycheck/pay-stubs

Changes their established routine with no apparent reason

Begins discouraging you from calling him/her them at work

Is often unavailable when you try to call him/her at work.

Returns calls long after you leave a message for him/her.

Prefers to attend work functions (or any events) alone and tries to discourage you from attending.

Takes more trips for business reasons and even refuses to let you drive him/her to the airport.



Telephone Mannerisms: Your partner or spouse

Receives mysterious phone calls.

You get an increasing number of hang-ups or wrong numbers when you pick up the phone. Especially if the caller hangs up after hearing your voice and doesnt speak, because often (though not always) is a person who makes a real wrong number will at least ask, Is Fred there? before hanging up.

Phone bills show unexplained toll or long distance charges.
Hurriedly answers the phone to answer it before you do.

Leaves the room to talk on the phone.

Whispers while on the phone.

Suddenly need a cell phone (or pager) and discourages you from looking at or using the phone or pager.

Deletes numbers from caller ID.

Behaves differently or ends the telephone calls abruptly when you enter the room. Or appears to hang up quickly.

Paper Trails:

Finding credit card receipts for gifts you didnt receive.

An increase in ATM withdrawals. Especially those from out-of-town (receipts bear a time/date stamp).

Credit card receipts showing purchases from places that unknown to you or seem suspect

He/she rushes to get the mail before you do.

Unusual phone numbers appear on the bill.

The duration and time of the calls appear excessive.

He/She are secretive about their cell phone bill.

She/He starts to pay the phone bills or credit card bills themselves.

You notice business travel or other deductions for travel or other expenses that you were unaware of.

Automobile related:

The passengers seat is adjusted differently than you had left it.

Taking child seat out of the car for no particular reason.

Finding suspicious items like phone numbers, receipts, lipstick, condoms or strange hairs in the vehicle.

Keeping a change of clothes in the trunk.

Unexplainable mileage or a lack of additional mileage. For example, if your spouse state they went out of town yet the odometer indicates that only a distance of 25 miles had been driven. Conversely, if your spouse states theyd only been to the office that day, yet their odometer shows many more miles ad been driven, this too, may be a significant matter.

Computer-related:

They warily guard access to their computer.

They shut down the computer as you walk into the room.

They add password protection their computer.

Or they stay up to "work" on the computer long after youve gone to bed.

They have unusual sites showing in their browser history, or erase them after each late-night session.

They delete email message more frequently

Again, let me reiterate that these behaviors are only indicators of infidelity and are not absolutes.

Some cheaters are very deceitful and can cover their tracks superbly. They may become more attentive in an effort to compensate for the fact that their attentions are going elsewhere. They behave like model parents in an effort to alleviate their guilt. They can juggle the extra-marital relationship, while tending to the marriage in a seemingly flawless way.

They may also have friends that will help them to get out of the house or provide alibis for the cheater.

These are the people who are the hardest to catch, and the ones who cause the most pain when they are finally caught.

These constitute even more reason to consider retaining the services of a professional investigator.

When You Begin to suspect, just observe -dont accuse:

If, after some consideration, you begin to have suspicions then dont accuse, but just observe.

If you accuse your partner and are mistaken, you risk causing unnecessary and irreparable damage to your relationshipdamage that may take a lot of time to recover from.

And, even if you are correct, its quite possible that your spouse/partner will be able to explain their behavior in a manner thats sufficient to cause you raise reasonable doubt. And, because they are now aware that you are suspicions, they will be even more careful and more guarded, making it much more difficult for you to determine the truth.

If you become suspicious, dont treat the cheater any differently and dont interfere.

Now is the time for careful observation, and not for anger.

The cheater will eventually be found out, so its important to be patient, observant, and to make note of patterns of behavior.

After some patient observation youll probably be able to provide a great deal of helpful information to a

professional investigator, so that the investigator can obtain the evidence and documentation you need.

Make note of information such as: the most likely days/times when your partner may be misbehaving, places your partner alleges to frequent, people with whom your partner alleges to keep company.

The more information you have (regardless of whether you think its important or not), the greater the likelihood an investigator can determine the truthand do it in the most cost-effective manner.

A final word of caution:

If you think a spouse or partner is misbehaving while youre out of town, you may consider pretending to plan a trip out of town, in order to conduct your own surveillance and confirm your suspicions.

You should be discouraged from doing this is because if your suspicions are confirmed, your emotions may cause you to react in a manner that is counter-productive.

Emotions can make all us behave in a reactionary way, and at moments like this, its vitally important to keep a cool head.

Often, innocent people will respond directly by saying, Yes or No. They are more likely to respond to your

inquiry directly, kindly and patiently. They are more likely to show that they are willing to discuss your concerns and

to address those things that caused you to doubt in the first place.

Cheaters are generally very uncomfortable about addressing the issue and may explode and become very defensive and angry.



When confronting them, if may help to inquire about specific occasions when you -know- for certain what the truth is, so you can see if they are lying. Finally: Do not resort to violence.

Who said Knowledge is Power? Did You Fall For this Big Lie? I get concerned sometimes when I see people, especially those who read one too many real estate investing articles, believing that "knowledge is power".

The truth is- the world is full of educated "failures", is it not?

If knowledge were power, we'd all be taking orders from professors, librarians would run governments, and you would welcome the door-to-door Encyclopedia salesman warmly into your home.

And everyone who'd ever read a bunch of real estate investing articles would be a RE mogul multimillionaire.

That's just not the way it is, though, is it?

No, knowledge is not power. Not in and of itself, anyway.

Applied knowledge is true power.

It's not what you 'know' but what you DO with what you know that will bring about your greatest results.

I write REI articles in part because I'm driven to write, so I may as well provide some kind of benefit to somebody...by sharing what I know with others.

And while I can attest from personal experience that you can gain invaluable knowledge when you make reading RE investing articles part of your regular schedule, it's just not enough to get the knowledge. You must utilize all resources at your disposal to implement the knowledge recentyl acquired.

How Lack of the "Straight Safety Net" Creates Stress for Queer Couples

In this article I will explore two strands of the "straight safety net"heteronormative assumptions and heterosexual privilegeand how these create often unacknowledged stress for queer couples. Following are three different scenarios from my sessions with queer couples that exemplify some of these common stressors.

1) Yvonne & Angela: How homophobia ruined our romantic vacation

After I asked a lesbian couple why they hadn't taken a vacation together in five years, this is what they told me:

Yvonne:

I took her on what was advertised as a "gay-friendly destination" but as it turned out, we were the only queer couple in sight! Consequently she was really paranoid in public and wouldn't hold my hand on the beach or became really uncomfortable if I suggested a restaurant that looked slightly romantic. She's a butch woman, so people were staring at her anyway because they couldn't quite place her on the gender spectrum. It pretty much killed the romance factor out in public, and unfortunately it translated into the bedroom as well. She just couldn't make that transition when we were alone. It was as if she didn't take a breath until we got home. Needless to say, we haven't been on an overseas vacation since!

Angela:

I think on some level I just didn't feel safe. I didn't speak the language or know the people. They stared at me all the time. I think they couldn't figure out if I was a guy or a girl. It might sound ridiculous, but I was expecting to be attacked at any moment. Consequently, my guard was up at all times.

This couple had to deal with a whole set of stressors that a heterosexual couple would probably never need to consider when planning their holiday (like having to find a "heterosexually-friendly destination"). So much of the travel industry is geared towards the romantic getaway, but those getaways are mostly aimed at heterosexual couples. This omission of queer couples is part of what is termed "heteronormative assumptions."

Heteronormative assumptions refer to automatic unconscious beliefs and expectations that reinforce heterosexuality and heterosexual relationship as the ideal norm. Thus, heteronormative assumptions create a society where only heterosexual relationships are visible (McGeorge and Carlson, 2011).*

Although the travel industry has become savvy to a whole previously untapped market and there are now ads for gay-friendly destinations on every queer travel site, the truth is that this can also be a marketing ploy. As Yvonne and her girlfriend found when they got to their "gay-friendly" destination, the locals hadn't been informed!

2) Gloria & Maria: A pregnant lesbian couple's first birthing class together

Gloria:

I was so uncomfortable that we were the only queer couple in the room! On top of that the trainer had us do an experiential where she asked the fathers to go on one side and the mothers on the other. She at least corrected herself when she saw me standing there awkward and alone. I felt so humiliated!

The rest of this session was spent processing Maria's feelings about the class and her ambivalence toward attending more classes. Although Gloria was sympathetic to Maria's dilemma, she was also clear that she wanted Maria's support at the birth and needed to know that Maria had the knowledge to provide it. In the end, despite the stress the first class had caused, they did go back for another class and found to their delight that there was a new trainer who was much more GLBTQ savvy and aware. What a relief!

Again, these are not stressors a heterosexual couple would ever have to deal with. Being part of mainstream culture, it is easy for heterosexuals to take for granted the safety net that is automatically available. This is part of what is coined as "heterosexual privilege." Furthermore the lack of affirmative mirroring that queer couples receive has both subtle and gross implications. "One of the less visible, but potentially most influential privileges that heterosexual individuals receive is an increased self worth that comes with being part of the dominant socially sanctioned group" (Hoffman, 2004; Worthington, Savoy, Dillon & Vernaglia 2002). When who you are and how you love is not reflected in your world, whether on TV, in films, books or other forms of mainstream media, the effect on self-esteem is persistent and corrosive, once again creating more stressors for queer couples

3) Disturbing comments from well-meaning family members

Even family members who are normally respectful toward a gay couple can fall prey to heteronormative assumptions. The following occurred during a session with a gay couple, one of whom was unemployed and looking for work. He had been offered a position overseas but had decided to turn it down because it meant being too far away from his partner.

Mike:

Can you believe my Dad encouraged me to take that job in Singapore with no regard for how it would affect my partner who has a full practice here? It was as if he saw me as a single man, living with "a good friend," but certainly no one to consider if I was being offered employment overseas. He would never say that to my heterosexual brother and his wife!

Bill:

Your dad is always friendly to me when he sees me but hearing that makes me feel invisible.

Mike's father was unintentionally hurtful by omission. The undermining quality that this lack of mirroring creates has a corrosive effect on self-esteem. Mike is left with the message that his relationship is less visible, less valid, and less valuable than his heterosexual brother's.

In summary

When I hold space for a queer couple in session, I am also considering factors outside the couple dyad, such as the effects of heteronormative assumptions and privilege that can exacerbate existing stressors in the couple. For instance, Gloria and her wife have all the stressors of being pregnant but not the knowledge that they are seen and held in a supportive community. Yvonne and her girlfriend finally find the time and money to take a vacation together only to discover they have to keep their guard up and don't feel safe enough to express their affection and love for one another. Then, there is Mike having to deal with the crushing effects of unemployment on his self-esteem, only to have his father exacerbate this problem by unintentionally disregarding his long-standing partnership.

Queer couples simply don't have the safety net that heterosexual couples can take for granted. The society at large does not provide the validation and affirmation that a queer couple could rely on for support during difficult times. The need for this validation and affirmation first has to be acknowledged by the individual or couple and then self-generated. While many queer couples have been very resourceful in generating their own safety nets by building their own communities and support systems, the freefall, in terms of the stigma of being an outsider and the resulting isolation, is ever present for those who do not.

The Five Biggest Wedding Preparation and Planning Mistakes

Just as with any big show, your wedding day will not be perfect - but that's okay. While you cannot plan ahead for every little detail or problematic situation that may arise, you can arm yourself with some helpful advice to be prepared at all times for any potential wedding mistakes. But before you begin planning your special day, consider these five biggest wedding preparation and planning mistakes that amateur 'wedding planners' often make.

1. Not Budgeting Costs

It's hard to believe, but true - many couples do not create a budget when it comes to wedding preparation and end up in a deep hole of debt. The very first thing you should do to avoid disastrous (and bankrupting) wedding mistakes is devise an itemized budget, allowing for the necessary requirements, such as a venue for both the ceremony and reception, food and drinks, flowers, favors, decorations, etc. If anything is left over, either use this money for your honeymoon or spend it on something a little more frivolous, like a horse drawn carriage for your departure from the reception.

Budgeting ahead of time also involves your acknowledging the fact that you may surpass the total by at least 10%. Surprises do happen, so cutting back on other needless things will ensure that you don't go over budget too much. In these initial wedding preparation stages, you and your fianc need to discuss who will be paying for what. It used to be that the bride's parents paid for everything, but this ideal is slowly fading away. If you're still coming up short on funds, there are literally hundreds of ways to cut costs for your wedding day, including having fewer guests, choosing an off-season date, selecting flowers that are in season, and having friends and family play a bigger part by making the wedding cake or trying their hand at photography.

2. Not Giving Yourself Enough Time

The image of the harried bride has been engrained into the psyche through a number of television shows that hype up the combination of little to no time and a 'my way or the highway' attitude. This is why giving yourself ample wedding preparation time is necessary to ensuring that your wedding flows seamlessly. If you want a large, extravagant wedding, you need to begin planning at least a year and a half in advance; for a smaller, more intimate wedding of about 50 guests, eight months to a year is fine. You need to take into account what your plans are for your wedding and adjust your schedule accordingly to prevent costly wedding mistakes from occurring.

Giving yourself more wedding preparation time allows you to order your cake, dress, wedding favors, flowers, decorations, etc. well in advance so that you don't come up empty-handed from last minute rushing. Allotting enough time also applies to your wedding ceremony and reception. For brides, their bridesmaids are there to help them with the important duties of the wedding day, so creating a short list of responsibilities for each friend is not unexpected. Mothers, family members, and friends are also glad to help run a few erra nds or make calls for you if you ask. Just make sure you ask someone you know will get the job done on time.

Part of the wedding experience also relies on a number of people who require detailed wedding preparation directives from you, such as the caterer, photographer, florist, transportation and/or drivers, and DJ. Discussing your ideas with them ensures that you can work together on the same wavelength and avoid embarrassing wedding mistakes during the actual reception. You should also arrange for the wedding party to meet at the church or the wedding ceremony location at a specified time. Corralling so many people at the same time is what leads many couples to pick up the wedding party members at their homes. Late arriving wedding party members is one of the most frequent and sometimes uncontrollable wedding mistakes a bride and groom have to deal with.

4. Not Hiring a Wedding Planner or Someone You Trust

Many brides swear by their w edding planners, and yes, it's true that they take care of just about everything involved in wedding preparation and planning, preventing a number of the more common wedding mistakes brides make. It's kind of like you and your fianc are the stars, while the wedding planner works behind the scenes for your big performance, seeing everything from start to finish. Wedding planners know all the ins and outs of great wedding preparation and planning and can help the couple find reliable caterers, bridal attire and supply stores, transportation, and DJs at lower prices. Before signing any contracts, however, talk with the wedding planner to see if it's a situation you're happy with.

While incredibly helpful, wedding planners can also be pricey, unfortunate for the bride who is trying to cut costs. This scenario goes back to delegating responsibilities - ask someone you trust to help you make wedding preparation arrangements and appointments with each wedding supply store an d/or vendor. You can even scale back operations and have a simplistic wedding that you plan or DIY completely to save money.

5. Not Fully Considering the Reception Venue and Details

Sending your guests on a wild goose chase to find the reception venue is something that happens more often than you'd think and is one of the biggest wedding mistakes couples overlook. For out-of-town guests, this is confusing; for in-town guests, it's an annoyance. Choosing a reception venue that's close to the wedding site is a must, unless you provide the transportation to and from the reception. More than 15 - 20 minutes away is a hassle, and some guests may not even bother going if it's farther than that.

Otherwise, if your reception venue is outside (or exposed to the elements), rain and windy conditions may appear so you should always have a back up in cases of inclement weather. A rained out wedding reception is one of the more common wedding mistakes brides have neglected to plan for. Part of the wedding preparation necessities should also include your requesting the venue's landscaper to spray for bugs so your guests aren't being bitten by mosquitoes and gnats.

Learn to Laugh Off Those Wedding Mistakes

Pre-wedding preparation, while helpful, will inevitably miss some little detail of your big day. These wedding mistakes (or, more likely, minor 'blips') are to be expected and may even provide a funny moment for you and your fianc to laugh about in the future. Wedding mistakes do and will happen, but you shouldn't be bothered by them. Simply go on with the show and smile - no one will know the difference!
